Writing Exercise - Day 2

Create a character. Write a brief scene of them in a setting. Also use this paragraph to introduce the character to the reader by how they react to their setting.

Charlie sighed. He’d ordered a black coffee ten minutes ago and the girls behind the counter were still busy making drinks for customers that had ordered after him. A black coffee - that’s all he wanted. A simple enough order, but Charlie wasn’t surprised he didn’t have it yet. People didn’t go out of their way to convenience Charlie, even when it was their job. At restaurants, his orders always seemed to get lost; ‘Oh gosh, it looks like someone in the kitchen just forgot!’ waitresses told him after he finally managed to flag them down for some water and ask after his food. Probably these girls had forgotten too. Charlie looked ruefully at the good couch, which was open, but not for long. He sighed and moved to get back in line. The couple in front of him was eyeing the couch as well. ‘Oh, there’re two of them, they should get the couch anyway,’ Charlie thought.

“One black coffee press for here!” Charlie looked up hopefully. A barista with dreads and a nametag that said ’Ben’ scanned the waiting area. “A black coffee for…Charlie?” Charlie stepped out of line. “Sorry it took a bit, sir,” said Ben, lowering his voice so Charlie had to lean in. “The girls are both new and we didn’t have any fresh coffee - I just brewed this. Your refill’s on the house, thanks for waiting.”

Charlie nodded. “Thanks.” Taking his drink, he made his way over to the couch, trying not to betray his eagerness to get there. He sat and sighed, this time happily. The couple in line watched him sit down and looked at each other, then turned their backs, leaving Charlie to his coffee.
